Moktoberfest 2013 & The Craft Beer Boom!

Moktoberfest 2013

Last weekend saw the first ever Moktoberfest take place in Moray to introduce craft beer to folks from all around the area. We headed down on the Friday night (for market research purposes of course!) to check it out and first impressions from the outside of Elgin Town Hall were “oh dear, what have we just driven 40 miles for?” but once we were inside we were totally blown away as to how busy the hall was and what a great buzz there was!

Now we’re certainly not saying that the Elgin Town Hall was the most aesthetically pleasing nor picturesque setting for an event like this but to be honest once you were in and got chatting to the friendly door and bar staff and took the first sip of craft beer the venue didn’t really seem so bad, it was all about the atmosphere. And given that the event was organised in a very short space of time as a collaboration charity project between Windswept Brewing Co, Spey Valley Brewery and Brewmeister we take our hats off to them and say well done guys!

MoktoberfestNot only was there a wide selection of craft beers on cask and in bottles, there was also some tasty ciders, yummy sausages and great live music to add to the buzz! And to top it all off you got to go home with a branded pint glass (to add to the collection) to remember it all by. It will be interesting to see where Moktoberfest goes now and what will happen next, watch this space we think…

Our interest in craft beer only started about 5 months ago after attending Brew at the Bog at Bogbain Farm where we got tweeting with Nick from the Highland Bottle Shop. This then progressed onto initiating our first visit to the shop and the rest is history!

This new love for craft beer has since led to Snow teaming up with HLBShop for a rather exciting project which will be unveiled very soon…in the meantime though you might want to check out this Highland Social event that’s taking place on the 8th November in Inverness called Social Beats n Beer, it’s a joint effort between Highland Social, Highland Bottle Shop and Customised to bring you the best craft beers, the sounds to match and some pretty tasty ‘beer’ cupcakes too!

And as a sheer coincidence this blog post was actually started whilst sitting in the Heathmount Hotel in Inverness (with a non-alcoholic frothy cappuccino unfortunately) who have, within the last few weeks introduced the popular craft beer, St Mungo’s by Glasgow based WEST onto tap…craft beer may be a new concept but awareness and demand is clearly growing at a substantial rate. Moktoberfest is just one example of how craft beer is becoming the next big thing…
